Brent Russell gained 23 Springboks test caps, of which only seven were starts. His debut was as a replacement flyhalf against Wales at Bloemfontein in 2002, coming on in the 47th minute for Ricardo Loubscher. The original number ten, André Pretorius, switched to fullback. Brent went on to make a further three appearances at flyhalf, seven at fullback, nine on the wing, and two at centre, before rounding off his full set on his 16th appearance by coming on as a replacement scrumhalf for the last 14 minutes for Jaco van der Westhuyzen against Wales in Cardiff in November 2004.

The only other player to have appeared in all possible positions in the backs is Ruan Pienaar.
