Barry made his bow for the Boks against Canada in East London on June 10, 2000, where he scored the first of his three tries in the Green and Gold. The hard running, crashball inside centre’s other two tries came two years later when he scored a brace against Samoa in the Boks’ 60-18 win at Loftus Versfeld.
Barry was renowned for his bone-crunching defence and then record midfield partnership with Marius Joubert. They complimented each other brilliantly with Barry happy make the hard yards and big hits with Joubert running off him into space.
Barry was at his absolute best in 2004 when he played a key role in South Africa’s Tri-Nations winning campaign. He was rewarded for his splendid season with a nomination for SA Rugby Player of the Year but lost out to Schalk Burger.
Provincially, he captained both Western Province – 65 caps – and the Stormers – 66 caps – and was named the 2004 Super 12 Player of the Tournament. After a stint at English club Harlequins, Barry returned to South Africa in 2009 where he played in the historic match between the Southern Kings and the British & Irish Lions and captained Eastern Province to the Currie Cup First Division semi-finals.
