Muller was a no-nonsense midfielder who made his Springbok debut alongside the legendary Danie Gerber against the All Blacks in Johannesburg on August 15, 1992. The Boks succumbed 27-24 but it was evident that the new midfield combination worked wonders as Muller scored a memorable try and Gerber went over for a brace.
Muller won 33 Tests in all, five of which he combined with Gerber. He played in 17 Tests from 1992-1994 but would only win his next cap four years later thus he missed the historic 1995 World Cup campaign. International silverware would not elude him much longer as he was the first choice No 12 of Gary Teichmann’s Tri-Nations winning squad of 1998.
Muller was selected for the 1999 World Cup squad and scored his third and final Test try in the 47-3 win over Spain in the pool stages. He played a prominent role in both the quarter-final and semi-final clashes and made his final appearance for the Boks in the third place play-off with New Zealand in Cardiff on November 4, which South Africa won 22-18.
