A South African Test player who represents the Sharks in the Super 14, Deon Carstens has the ability to play at either loose or tighthead prop.
He made his Test debut against Scotland at Murrayfield in a 21-6 defeat and a week later he won his second cap in a 53-3 thrashing by England at Twickenham.
He did not make another Test appearance for four years and his versatility has sometimes worked against him but he did make the Springboks squad to play the British & Irish Lions in 2009.
He came on as a replacement in the first Test in Durban as the home side scraped a narrow 26-21 victory but he did not make another appearance in the series as South Africa won 2-1.
