Garrison were playing against Harlequins in Pretoria just after I returned from Germany, and due to the war we were very much a hotch-potch lot.
There was this little scrumhalf opposing me and I noticed he passed with pin-point accuracy and never gave his stand-off half a suicide pass. War having broken out - I was due to serve in the war - I said after the match that I had played my last game, but that I had seen a man who could take my place as scrumhalf in the Springbok side.
That man was Fonnie du Toit, and he certainly performed at scrumhalf with distinction for his country. His partnership with Hansie Brewis has become part of rugby legend.
