RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1967 – FR Plt Alfred Dendy LAWTON (55), PRAW, BSAP, was killed in an aircraft accident, seven miles from Umtali on the Penhalonga Road. His plane crashed during a combined air and ground op at Toronto Farm, Penhalonga. He was dropping a spool of film or a message to a PATU team on the ground. Asst Senior Commissioner Eric White suffered severe burns and Lawton's observer, Police Reservist Bill Perkins, also survived with serious burns. Born in South Africa, Lawton was a lawyer by profession and played in the victorious Springbok rugby team, against New Zealand, in 1937.
