Piet was a country boy who had to work hard to reach the top. But he was a bit luckier than most players from rural areas. His father-in-law, Jumbo Harris, mining manager, was a loyal club member of Ammosal and he really built up the club and its players.

He had a great deal to do with Piet's success as he taught him to train and practice methodically. Once Piet had perfected his kicking he concentrated on his running and ability to break the line, and one can see how well he succeeded in that respect, and how often he broke the line in his later tests.

He reminded me of Tony Harris in many ways - a player who seldom broke but when he did, it usually led to a try. Piet Visagie played a great role in our rugby history.
