Like so many Springboks worth their salt he was a very reserved and quiet man. In later years he lived and farmed at Muldersvlei, an area nearby Stellenbosch. He was a small wing, smaller than most, but very agile and had a sidestep most wings can only dream of. Mr Markotter thought a great deal of him.

It was during a tour with Stellenbosch that his play really blossomed. Then, when Cove-Smith's Lions toured this country in 1924 he was selected for South Africa. During the test match at Newlands he established a then record number of points for an individual in an international; two well-executed tries and a drop goal. The record stood until Bennie Osler scored 14 points off his own bat against the touring All Blacks, four years later.
