If ever there was an unlucky player it was the late Geoff Gray. He played rugby for the sheer enjoyment of it and to him the game was an adventure. He never wanted to be told what to do, to concern himself with the grind; he just wanted to have the ball in his hands and to enjoy himself running with it.

He was prone to injury however, and this cost him many test matches. I'm sure that if it were not for that he would have become a Springbok captain.

With his long stride, he was as fast as anyone could wish. Above all he was a gentleman - loved throughout our land.
