"J.C." was one of the first of a handful of Boks who gained the Green and Gold before they gained their provincial colours - Wrentmore, Immelman, P.K. Albertyn, myself, Johnny Bester and Dawie Snyman were the others.

"J.C." was at his best during the trials for the 1931/32 tour to the U.K. He had played very well against the 1928 All Blacks, although a surprise selection at the time. One of Mr Markotter's selections, he never disappointed Mr Mark. How could one ever have let that great coach down, anyway?

"J.C." was the vice-captain of the 1931/32 tour to the U.K. and we had a strange situation throughout. There were two groups: The older squad, more experienced players, and we youngsters, and the two groups automatically stuck to their own age groups. The older ones would play bridge for money and the youngsters would play poker and such - like just for the fun of it. "J.C.," as a member of the older brigade, nevertheless looked after the youngsters and he did it well. As a matter of fact he "made" the youngsters - we all looked up to him, respected him, and "J.C." was the man who kept the team together as only he could.

Sadly, he suffered an injury during the tour and couldn't quite produce his brilliant best. He never again played after our return.

A worthy Springbok - worthy in every respect.
