Clive Ulyate became prominent as a cricketer at about the same time he became prominent as a rugby player. And like all cricketers who played rugby he had the adventurous spirit. Sport came naturally to him. A very talented sportsman, and quick to adapt to the demands of any game.

It's strange how many top South African cricketers were Springbok flyhalves as well, Tony Harris was another who comes to mind.

I very much doubt if I am wrong when I say that if Clive had continued with his cricket he would have earned double Springbok colours.

There is another man who will have good cause to remember Clive Ulyate - Theuns Briers. During the last test of the 1955 Lions tour Clive's immaculate diagonal kicking enabled Theuns to snatch two dramatic tries. South Africa won that match 22-8 and squared the series against that brilliant side.
