Martin Johannes “Cowboy” Saunders was born on 26 November 1927 in Hobhouse and educated at Elliot. A strong, uncompromising forward, he became a stalwart of Border rugby during the 1950s and was known for his fearless play and hard tackling, qualities that earned him his rugged nickname.
Representing the Border Bulldogs, Saunders became one of the province’s most respected players of his era, displaying consistent form that brought him national recognition. He was selected for the Springbok squad in 1956 for the demanding tour of New Zealand and Australia, where his toughness and work ethic made him a valuable member of the touring pack, though he did not feature in any official Tests.
A player of great character and determination, “Cowboy” Saunders embodied the fighting spirit of Border rugby - quietly effective, team-focused, and always ready for the hard yards. He passed away on 17 May 2006 at the age of 78, remembered as one of the unsung heroes of South African rugby’s golden provincial era.
