Sebastiaan Jacobus “Ian” Hattingh was born on 31 October 1964 in Lindley in the Free State and attended Hoërskool Kroonstad, better known as the “Blouskool,” a school with a strong rugby tradition. From early on, he showed the hallmark qualities of a versatile and hard-working forward - strong in the scrums, mobile in open play, and reliable in the tight exchanges.

Hattingh made his name in provincial rugby with the Transvaal (later Lions) during one of their most competitive eras. His adaptability allowed him to cover multiple positions in the pack, making him a valuable squad member in a team that produced several Springboks in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Known for his physical approach and dedication, he earned respect from teammates and opponents alike for his quiet professionalism and consistency on the field.

His strong domestic performances were rewarded with selection to the Springbok squad, and though he did not feature in a Test match, his inclusion reflected his standing among South Africa’s top forwards of the time. Representing the Springboks in any capacity during the early 1990s - a period of transition and resurgence for South African rugby - was a significant achievement and testament to his ability and perseverance.
