Antonie Christoffel Stegmann was born on 25 August 1883. He attended Swartland and played provincial rugby for Western Province on test debut.

Ds. Anton Stegmann is the son of Frederick Stegmann and Elise Johanna (van Heerden) Stegmann. He had 12 siblings including three doctors and Professor Ebenhaezer Theodorus Stegmann, a mathematician and lector at Stellenbosch.

He was married to Alice (Rossouw) Stegmann. Ds. Anton was schooled in Malmesbury and qualified as a teacher before he started his theological studies at Victoria College in 1904. He gained his place in the first fifteen of Stellenbosch in 1905. In the Currie CupTournament, he only played two games for Western Province before becoming a Springbok in 1906. He played in two test matches, scoring a try in the last test against Ireland. He had a wonderfully sure pair of hands, took and gave his passes very cleanly, and was a wonderfully good tackler.

As a pastor, he worked in Port Elizabeth, Worcester, Koringberg, Woodstock and Burgersdorp. From 1941 to retirement in 1954 he worked as Sunday School secretary. He had a street named after him in Vereeniging in 1939. He passed away in an old age home in Pretoria in 1972.

Anton Stegmann died on 23 January 1972, aged 88.
