Cecil was very well thought of when he was playing centre for UCT.

He subsequently went to Natal and started playing on the wing. I happened to see him there and when we experienced problems with the wing berth in 1949, I proposed him. He was selected, and indeed became vice-captain of the Springboks in that series.

Here was a determined runner for the line. He had long legs which carried him through many a gap. Great courage was his, and there was no stopping him.

One does not normally associate that kind of fearlessness with a man who goes from centre to wing but Cecil Moss had that quality. That was what made him great. He still has those characteristics today, both as a national selector and as Springbok coach.
