A solid, well-built prop, Doug Holton was domiciled in Port Elizabeth when he was selected for the Test match against the first Scotland touring team in South Africa in 1960.
He had also represented Rhodesia during the 1950s.
Although South Africa won the match 18-10, there were wholesale changes made by the national selectors when the first Test against New Zealand came up a month later, and Holton was one of six debutantes against Scotland to lose his place, with veteran Chris Koch and Fanie Kuhn called up for duty in the four Tests.
He was chosen for the long tour of the British Isles and France at the end of that year, and played in two matches as a prop and one as a hooker after Abie Malan had been injured and replacement Bobby Johns called for.
But Holton himself was injured and took no further part in the tour – a sad end to his international career.
