Roy Dryburgh was in many respects a most unfortunate captain; he was dropped at a time when he didn't deserve it.

He aired his grievances about that; and no one could blame him. It is an insult to be kicked out as captain and still play in the team, and I, for one, will not be party to that kind of treatment to any player.

Morne du Plessis' father, Felix, for instance, after captaining the Springboks in the first three tests in 1949 was dropped as captain for the fourth test as well as from the team.

Dryburgh, like T. A. Samuels before him, was a very versatile player. He could play as well at fullback as he could on the wing.

During the 1956 tour of Australia and New Zealand he scored six tries against Queensland. This is still a record for a Springbok in a single match.
