THOMAS DANNHAUSER (TOMMY) DU PLESSIS, who made his debut at scrumhalf for Northern Transvaal in 1975 and was that year elected as one of the most promising players of the year - under 24 - was one of the stars of the “Ligbloues” in 1978.
With a mass of 82 kg and a height of 1,83 m, Du Plessis is one of the biggest and strongest scrumhalves in South African rugby. This has enabled him to take a lot of pressure off Northern Transvaal’s flyhalf, Naas Botha, and has made Du Plessis a formidable opponent to contend with at all times. His judicious kicking and strong breaks have made him a thorn in the flesh of all opposing sides.
