Early in his career Ian showed that he was of Springbok calibre. As far as I am concerned, Ian is an example of what a Springbok should be: neat, well behaved; one who applied the rules of sportsmanship in every aspect of life.

I never saw him get angry on the field or try to retaliate, and to my mind he was the perfect gentleman in everything he did.

In addition he was one of the greatest place kickers we have ever produced. Who can forget his marvellous kicking in the 1970 series against the All Blacks, or during the tour of Australia in 1971? Who indeed!!
