Sketch in Springbok glory (1961): JBG Thomas

Robert Johns, the third hooker, was flown over as a substitute during the period of indecision when the management could not make up their minds about G. F. Malan. He was not the player the management wanted, but was the one sent by the South African selectors, and for his trouble he played in only one match, which was, of course, a great tragedy. There is nothing more soul-destroying for any player on tour to be continually passed over. He reached the British Isles oil December 9th and played in only one of the sixteen matches after this date. Unfortunately, he was given his one appearance in quite the hardest match of the Tour, against Bryn Meredith at Newport, a thing which in my opinion was totally unjust from the selectorial point of view. Quite naturally, he was beaten for possession by Meredith, who had a field day, and once more proved himself one of the great hookers of all time. Johns, a pleasant fellow, was educated at the Diocesan College and appeared for the Western Province. He also plays cricket, tennis, squash and golf, and is a company director. His claim to fame will be that he was the least-played substitute ever sent abroad by South Africa!
