Just prior to the fourth and final test of the 1896 series at Newlands in Cape Town on 5 September, JJ 'Scraps' Wessels, the Western Province forward who played in the first three tests, had to withdraw because of an injury. He was replaced by the Univeristy of Stellenbosch (Maties) forward Herman van Broekhuizen, who played in his only test. Van Broekhuizen never played for Western Province, making him the only Springbok never to appear for any province.
