Robert Twigge was born on 24 July 1936 and became one of Northern Transvaal’s notable wings during the late 1950s and early 1960s - a player whose speed and finishing instinct earned him a reputation as a prolific try-scorer. He first came to national attention when he toured Argentina with the Junior Springboks in 1959, where his outstanding form made him the top try-scorer of the tour. In six matches, he crossed the line 14 times, including two hat-tricks - one against Rosario and another in the second “Test” against Argentina, which South Africa won 20-6.

Twigge’s exploits on that tour led to his selection for the Springboks the following year. He earned his sole Test cap in 1960 when Scotland undertook the first-ever short international tour to South Africa. Twigge took the field at Port Elizabeth, where the Springboks defeated the Scots 18-10. Though his international career was brief, he left an impression with his pace, composure, and natural attacking flair on the wing.

At provincial level, Twigge represented Northern Transvaal from 1959 to 1962, playing nine matches in the famous light blue jersey. He was a key player for the powerful Silverton club, which was one of the leading sides in the old Carlton League during that era.

Robert Twigge passed away on 1 July 2017, shortly before his 81st birthday. He is remembered as one of the fine wingers produced by Northern Transvaal in the amateur era - a man who made the most of his opportunities and whose name remains part of South Africa’s rich rugby heritage.
