Legendary Northern Transvaal captain and Springbok flank Louis Schmidt was playing in the tough Carlton Cup League for Oostelikes when a punch from an Iscor player broke his nose. With no substitutes allowed, Schmidt wasted no time in returning to the field, although his team was well ahead and his presence not really needed.

As he took to the field he asked: ‘How much longer, Mr Ref?’ ‘Three minutes,’ answered the experienced provincial referee Mike Odendaal – and, sensing that trouble was just a whisker away, almost immediately blew the whistle for the game’s end!

‘Ag no, Mr Ref, you can’t do that!’ complained Schmidt. However, according to legend, Schmidt got his own back in the return match!
