Charlie Chignell, forward player of the Gardens Rugby Club in Cape Town, who never played rugby for the Western Province, but did on 5 September 1891 scored for South Africa against the British touring team of Bill MacLagan in his only test. Charlie played in two matches for the Cape Colony against the British visitors before the third and decisive test, where he made his debut for South Africa.
The Cape Colony team consisted of players all over the Cape Province.
"Fairy" Heatlie,
Ben Duff,
"Hasie" and
"Oupa" Versfeld,
Bob Shand,

Harry Boyes and more. Charlie Chignell must have been particularly high-ranked, to have played in the selected company of South African players.
