Gert Wilhelm "Tank" van Rooyen, also known as George van Rooyen, was a South African rugby player who excelled in both rugby union and rugby league. He was born on December 9, 1892, and had a diverse career across these two codes. He initially played rugby union for South Africa, earning two caps in 1921. Later, he transitioned to rugby league, moving to England in 1922 to join Hull Kingston Rovers, where he won the league championship in the 1922-23 season.
Van Rooyen then played for Wigan, making 178 appearances between 1923 and 1929. During his time with Wigan, he won the Challenge Cup and helped secure two Lancashire County League titles. After Wigan, he joined Widnes in 1929, becoming the club's first overseas player, and went on to win another Challenge Cup with them in 1930. He retired in 1933 after a successful career in both rugby codes.
